Pop-Up Grocery Volunteering – Bedok

This is our first volunteering event for the LSEAAS! Please join us for this inaugural event, taking place within days of the LSE’s Global Day of Volunteering.

Volunteer tasks include:

  • Assist with registration
  • Queue management
  • Engage with residents
  • Distribute groceries

We will be supporting Smiles Salam, a grassroots organisation supporting underprivileged Singaporeans, particularly those living in rental flats, through pop-up groceries, and donation drives for food, milk and diapers. Many of Smiles Salam’s beneficiaries are the elderly and those with physical handicaps. The pop-up groceries have been covered in TODAYMediacorp Berita, and others if you would like to read more.

About Smiles Salam

Smiles Salam was initiated by Azlina and Fahmi, proud parents of three children. They want their children to embody important values of empathy, kindness and graciousness and believe in doing good as a family.

In 2018, they planned their first overseas family outreach to expose their children to the challenging living conditions in rural Cambodia.

When the COVID-19 pandemic arrived in Singapore, the family pivoted their focus on providing excess food to vulnerable households. As residents of Bedok, they started their first Pop-Up Grocery in their own neighbourhood. The initiative was so welcomed by the residents and broader community that it was featured in the media as part of Budget 2021.

Since then, Smiles Salam has grown into 4 pop-up grocery locations, with a community fridge and extended to support vulnerable young parents and elderly with its flagship Milk & Diapers outreach.
